LOST IN TIME
LOST IN TIME
Will be released November 30th at noon EST.
In spring 2023 I visited a small tobacco farm in Viñales, Cuba and spent some time in the curing shed, eyes closed, experiencing the incredible smell and committing it to memory. Tobacco of course, but earthy, green, herbal, funky tobacco in various stages of curing. After returning home I began working to recreate it as a fragrance note.
Lost In Time was done at the request of several people on BaseNotes who wanted a realistic, not gourmand, tobacco and cedar fragrance without the typical vanilla, tonka or fruity notes. The smell of a tobacco farm in Kentucky, done realistically. By most accounts LOST IN TIME hits it out of the park. Photorealistic and free of the fruity-gourmand and sweet-heavy tonka notes that are typical of commercial tobacco fragrances, LOST IN TIME smells unique and performance is stellar.
PLEASE READ BEFORE SAMPLING: This is NOT a ‘tobacco fragrance’ - it is a realistic rendering of the smell of a tobacco curing shed with tobacco in various stages of curing. If you’re expecting it to smell like a packet of rolling tobacco or like pipe tobacco you’re going to be disappointed because those tobaccos are both fully cured and flavored to make them more appealing. It’s also probably not going to smell like any other tobacco fragrance, nor does it smell like tobacco absolute (though it does contain a lot of the absolute). THIS IS NOT ONE TO BUY WITHOUT SAMPLING FIRST - and, we would hope, not one to review unless you know what it’s supposed to smell like. Finally: curing tobacco has terpenic topnotes, which means there is some resemblance to turpentine or varnish, but it’s also earthy, green, herbal and funky - not something many people would necessarily want to wear if they don’t have the specific association. The drydown does smell like a cedar cigar box but if you don’t enjoy the opening, you’re really going to regret the stellar performance and longevity. You’ve been warned.
Notes include tobacco and cedar. Although not a listed note, the composition features high-grade Assam oud oil, which plays a role in both the tobacco and cedar notes and brings some barnyard funk, along with several other expensive and high-performing materials. Hence the higher price.
